Monica Rial Interview!!

At Anime USA in 2011, there was a voice actor I met who I fell in love with.  She was so sweet and cute, I enjoyed talking to her.  She has played in so man iconic roles and some we anime fans may have overlooked.  With 14 years in the business you can find her voice in shows such as Panty and Stocking (Stocking), Soul Eater (Tsubaki), Exel Saga (Hyatt) along with so many others.  She is none other than Monica Rial!  And I got the honor to sit down and chat with her for a little bit on Sunday before we left Katsucon.

Outside of acting, what are some of your hobbies and passions?

I recently learned how to crochet.  Sometimes I get together with Colleen Clickenbeard and d rink wine and craft.  Its a wonderful time.  I have always been creative.  When I used to have more time I would do costuming.  I made my brother into Totoro out of wire and foam.  My mom still has it.  I love learning new things.

What has been your biggest inspiration?

I would say it is to give the best performance I can for my fans.  My fans really inspire me and I want to proud.  I want them to feel the same way about a show whether it is subbed or dubbed.  They should love the acting in both versions.

Do you get to choose the characters you want to voice?

We go in and choose 3 to audition for, but it is generally up to the director as of to who plays who.  Sometimes the Japanese director and actors pick who they want to voice their characters.  That’s kind of coll to have the Japanese directors say my voice is sexy.

What would be your dream role?

Well I am working on one now that is like a dream, but I can’t talk about it just yet.  But I would love to play a bad ass in a video game.  I joke that my little girls pay the electric bills, and they are fun to play, but a bad ass females are fantastic.

So far what has been your biggest accomplishments?

Still being in the business after 14 years.  That says something, its still surprising I got this far and to hear myself being called on of the most significant voice actors in the business.  I did do a movie with Freddy Prinz Jr which was amazing.  That says something right?

That sounds like that would a dream come true for me.

What is it like to see someone portraying one of your characters in cosplay?

I looooooove it!  When I started I played the secondary or tertiary characters and cosplayers tended to gravitate towards the main characters, so I didn’t see it as much as I do now.  When I voice Hyatt from Exel Saga, that was the starting point of really seeing my characters in cosplay form.  When I voice a new character I get excited to see what people come up with as far as cosplaying them. I feel connected to the, it is almost an emotional experience because you spend so much time with that charatcer, as that character, to see someone portray them is an honor.  Sometimes you want to just hug, kiss or kick the cosplayer depending on your emotions towards the character.  When you cosplay one of my characters…it’s like you are family now.

Would you ever cosplay on of your characters?

I did do that once, not at a convention though.  It was Halloween one year and I made Natsume, I was so excited.  Everyone thought I was Sailor Moon.  I had to keep explaining I was not from Sailor Moon. I would love to cosplay one of my characters, but I think that it would probably make it harder for some fans to draw the line between reality and fiction.

I would like to thank Monica Rial for taking time out of her incredibly busy schedule to meet with me.  I enjoyed every minute of it, from discussing the joys of dressing our cats up in costumes to talking about anime and cosplay in general.  Her cat, Michael Jackson (how cool of a name for a cat is that “Michael Jackson Don’t eat that!”) is not like Falcor and doesn’t like to wear costumes, he flops to the side. Maybe we can change that in him.  I cannot wait until the next time when I get to sit down with her some more.  It was truly an honor.
