Tekkoshodown: Brian Hagan

Last year Tekko reveal an amazing new game called Tekkoshodown. It is a blend of role playing games and social networking brought into real life at a convention.  You choose between a monster and a hero and based on your level and your gear you can win battles with the opposing side.   I got to sit down and talk with Tekkoshodown creator Brian Hagan.

Tekkoshodown was premiered in 2012, how did the first year go?

Brian: I wrote the rules maybe 2 weeks before Tekko.  I contacted former students who are artists a put together over 200 art pieces special for the game.  A local printing shop (Triangle Poster Printing) did the printing for me.  It was by pure luck, I bumped into the printer at a pizza shop.  Honestly the game could not have happened without him.  But the game was thrown together in a week and it was basically trial by fire.  I think it all went pretty well considering.

How did the con-goer respond to the game?

Brian: the venue posed some challenges, but everyone was very pleased with the game and many of them have come back this year to play as well.

Are there any future plans for the game?

Brian:  There was a lot of play testing and you never know what will happen with a project like this until you let people break it.  We will see what the rest of the weekend will bring, but I am very happy with the game.  I hope everyone has fun.

How do you think the leaderboard actively effects the game?

Brian: Because there is no reward, it provides friendly competition. Everyone wants to see their name among the leaders.  if you make being a leader something valuable there will be cheating which is a scary thing.

The guild aspect is something new this year, how do you think that aspect is changing the game?

Brian: The game is acting like a typical MMO.  I didn’t intend for guilds to happen last year, but they did, as did gold farming.  Yea someone was paying people for their gear. There was also spawn squatting happening.  But as far as guilds it allows people to network in a different way than simply playing with one another.  You need to keep things simple, there is always the urge to add things like classes, races, magic etc.  Once you add all that it gets more complicated.  The way it is now with the added guild aspect helps keep it simple and promotes people helping one another.

What was one of the benefits of testing the game at the convention?

Brian: It allowed people to actually break it.  We were able to work out the bugs and learn how people will respond to the game.

Greg (play tester): being one of the play testers was a lot of fun.  I didnt expect the outcome it had last year and it is very impressive.  It is a great way to enhance the common ground between the hardcore gamer and the leisure gamer.  It is so enjoyable and socialable.

Last year the winner was Andrathea, he became the TekkoDragon.  I was able to find out his thoughts as well.

Andrathea:  The differences between last year and this year is that the bugs we found last year got fixed which helps improve the game drastically.  I like the guild aspect because if you have a few extra experience or gear you can give it to your guild mate to help them jump up in the leader board.  Im excited to see what it’s like this year.

Tekkoshodown is a great game.  I heard a rumor that if you kept your cards from this year, you will be able to pick off from where you left off.  I am not sure if it true, we shall see.  It was a great opportunity to meet new people and play a convention wide game.  you would look across the room and see someone who is a hero and want to fight them.  Mr. Hagan did an excellent job with his game and I look forward to seeing what else he will bring us.
