Nekocon-2014 Hampton Roads, VA

I attended Nekocon in Hampton, VA on Nov 7th-9th. This was my second year attending this con. Its a little bit of a drive but its nice, homey feeling con. There was definitely more attendees this year compared to last year. I also enjoyed the panels they had to offer this was a very wide variety. One of my favorites was the 18+ panel called “What the F**k did I just watch?” I was so confused at what I was watching and I haven’t laughed that hard in a while, so I guess you could say the panel sure did its job.  I also attended the rave with my good friend Ken, from Yenra Photography. I usually don’t attend the dances but I quit enjoyed the feel to Nekocon’s compared to some other cons I have been to in the past. I tried my hand at photography and worked with We Rise Mag in shooting some local con goers. I really enjoyed a lot of the craftsmanship the cosplayers had to offer as well. The venue location for Neko is also big and very easy to navigate through which is something most people don’t take the time to appreciate. Hotels are also all within pretty close walking distance, food is a little farther to get too but still walkable. The staff from what I saw were all very friendly and helpful. They accommodated to the needs of the attends and kept everyone safe.

The guest list was also extensive as well.  Josh Grelle, Todd Haberkorn, Kyle Hebert where some of the amazing voice actor guests who Nekocon brought in. You would know Josh Grelle from Air Gear (one of my favorites) and Black Butler. Todd Haberkorn has done Rosario + Vampire, Dragon Ball Z Kai, and of course Fairy Tail. Todd is one of those people who are always great to talk with and listen to his stories because he has been in the industry for so long. Kyle Hebert has done Dragon Ball since the beginning all the way to GT, YuYu Hackusho, and Naruto. Hearing Kyle bust into his voices from my childhood is always a great thing to hear and brings back so many memories of my childhood anime experiences and rekindles my love for the anime that started me on the path I am on today.

Overall I very much enjoy attending Nekocon. It is a laid back, homey, stress free con. It has a very friendly, hangout vibe to it, almost that all the attendees are friend with one another. Panels hold a varity of different options as well as the dealers room. They provide a nice guest list along with a well trained staff. I would suggest Nekocon to any of my friends. It is a drive from Pittsburgh but it is definitely a drive worth taking every year!
