On Saturday night of tekkoshocon I went to an 18+ panel called “My cosplay brings….” I was intrigued with the title so I thought I would check out what it was. The basics of the panel was that many female cosplayers cosplay characters that are scantily clad and are trying to gain attention.
Some of what the women who ran the panel was that women are viewed as if not useful academically need to be aesthetic pleasing. Women do sexy cosplays like Yuna from Final Fantasy or Yoko from Gurren Lagann, to justify roles and to justify the fact that they want to be accepted. Sexy cosplay are demeaning to women and men subjigate us. Anime, video games and manga sexify women, objectify women, and exploit women. Men get pleasure at women expense. Towards the end of the panel the lovely ladies stated that the women who are attention seekers or seeking acceptance don’t have self worth, self value. or have pride in themself.
There was a lot more to the panel along those lines. They stated there is no anime that portrays strong female leads that are not scantily clad, and if there are then the women are shown as stupid and chasing after men. This comment has sparked a research campaign within myself. I know there are anime that include strong female leads who are not stupid or chasing after a boyfriend: Claymore and Sacred Blacksmith are just two of them. The females in anime scantily clad or not don’t exploit women or are demeaning to us. I see it as fun and at times encouraging to love myself for who I am no matter what I look like. I get it that many anime portray women as skinny with big boobs, but thats part of it being entertaining. I don’t think anyone at a convention expects every woman to be that same build, though there are some women who look AMAZING in some of those sexy cosplays.

I don’t think there is a woman out there who does not enjoy being beautiful. So if you want to do a sexy cosplay like Yoko or Faye Valentine more power to you!
